Do you scroll Pinterest and wonder how the families you’re seeing look so perfectly put together? Believe it or not, with a few simple tips in mind, you can create the same cohesive look for your own fam (yes, you! Even if you totally do NOT have an eye for fashion)! Here are my top tips for putting together outfits for your session that will look and feel great!

Before you dive into my outfit tips, I want you to know that the most important thing is that you and your kids feel great in whatever you choose to wear! Confidence starts from within and, in order to truly look good, you need to feel good too!

With that being said, planning outfits can feel super tough! Let’s get into some easy tips that you can apply for your next family session to level up your outfits!

Patterns

If one person wants to wear a pattern, it is typically best if the others stick to solids. Less is more! Smaller patterns can be very flattering without creating the distraction of a larger pattern. The family above crushed it! Mom, dad and older daughter wore solids, with their youngest daughter wearing a small pattern with polkadots. See how clean this looks? The pattern on their littlest one creates interest without being distracting.

Fit

Believe it or not, the way your clothes fit is one of the most important things when it comes to your overall look and also the way you FEEL about how you look. Well fitted clothing compliments your body and shows you off in the best light! Sometimes, the jeans that look amazing on your best friend look terrible on you (and your heart breaks when you realize this lol)! The best thing you can do is pass on those jeans and, instead of trying to make them work, go find the jeans that DO compliment you! Take this approach when planning your outfits. Which pieces of clothing fit you best? If you’re not finding much in your closet, this might be the excuse you’ve been looking for to go shopping - woohoo! Wearing pieces that fit you well shows off inner and outer confidence in the best way.

Textures

Including different textures/materials in your outfit will help to make your photos more interesting to the eye. For example, wearing a knit sweater or chiffon top with jeans will have more contrast than a cotton top and cotton leggings. Check out the texture in this little babe’s onesie (above)!

Colours

Earthy/neutral colours photograph best and keep you loving your photos for years! Bright colours and neons are usually not the play. Rather than trying to match your family members, think about wearing complimentary colours. This is a big one! If you follow the rule of complimentary colours instead of matching, it will elevate your photos SO much :) The family above kept to neutral colours with blue jeans and earthy tops and then added a pop of colour with their oldest daughter wearing pink. I love this look!

Shoes

Don’t forget to plan which shoes you’re going to wear! They can really bring together your outfit. I always try to make sure the level of “dressiness” of my shoes matches the dressiness of my outfit. This rule doesn’t always apply though (ex. converse with a dress). Stick to your personalities and let them shine :)

Dresses/Skirts

If you or your littles plan to wear a dress or skirt, wear small shorts underneath. I will have you moving around a lot so shorts will keep you safe lol! I absolutely love dresses and skirts in photos! They create some movement and can effortlessly add a super feminine vibe to your images.
